Chapter 12
It was a bit disconcerting to be introduced as the bride he ordered. In fact, it was humiliating even though it was the truth down to the letter.
Sarah had to give the man credit. It wasn't everyday a cheating husband had the gall, the courage, the nerve, to introduce his wife to his mistress. And she had to admit, the widow was taking it quite well herself.
Perhaps Quinn wasn't the only married man this woman entertained. She would have to make certain Charity watched her husband, Lewis. The saloon was only two doors down from the black widow's web. And then there was Ruby. She would warn Ruby too, when she and her husband got back from their trip. Why, the doctor's house was right next door. Barely ten feet away from this harlot's door. How convenient.
"Come in, Sheriff. Let's get you some food and then we can discuss our arrangement. Since you have a wife now, I imagine your needs have changed."
Sarah couldn't believe her ears. The two of them were discussing their rendezvous right in front of her. Right in front of Becca. Is that what they did here in the west? Was there no respect for the sanctity of marriage? No common decency among women? How dare these twoâ
"Sarah? Are you going to sit down?" She blinked away images of Flora and Quinn locked in a lover's embrace and instead saw Quinn sitting at the woman's dining room table.
"I hardly think that would be appropriate, consideringâ"
The widow countered. "Nonsense. Please come join us. We have much to talk about now that we know about each other."
Sarah's mind reeled. This can't be happening. At least William had the decency to act offended when she found out about his affair. Quinn was sitting at the woman's table having breakfast. And he was expecting her to join them. Well, she had never heard of such goings on. It was barbaric.
âDidnât you say your name was Caldwell, Sarah? Becca. Would you like a cinnamon roll?" Flora offered. Well that was just too much. Now the woman was trying to win over her daughter? I wonât have it.
"No. Thank you, Mrs. Lawrence. She just ate breakfast and yes, I did introduce myself as Caldwell. Iâm not used to my new name yet. Iâm a widowâ"
"I want one!" Becca demanded. Without waiting for help from Sarah, her daughter climbed up into the chair next to Quin. He scooted her chair under the table and Flora dug into the pan of the sticky pastries.
Sarah supposed the next step was to do away with her and bury her body on the frozen mountain somewhere. Now she was just being ridiculous. The ground was too frozen to bury a bodyâ
"Come join us, Sarah. We have a lot to talk about." Quinn stood and pulled out the chair on his other side for her. What should she do?
Quinn was still standing, waiting for her to take the chair he offered, a look of puzzlement on his face at her hesitation.
